Every Windows 11 PC ships with Microsoft Defender Antivirus inside the Windows Security app, plus SmartScreen, a firewall and optional ransomware protection. For many people that is a solid baseline. A paid antivirus suite makes sense when you want stronger web and scam protection across every browser, extras such as a VPN, password manager and identity monitoring, or one subscription that also covers Macs, Android phones and iPhones in the same household.

Still on Windows 10?

Microsoft ended free support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, which means no more regular security updates unless you enroll in Extended Security Updates.
